One of the joys of weaving is following the threads to see what they want to do.

This scarf started out with the simple idea of a color-and-weave design. The pattern uses a three-end repeat in both warp and weft. Designer Angela K. Schneider played with a variety of Vävstuga’s versatile wool yarns and settled on 6/2 Tuna as her background and the finer, smoother 8/2 Möbelåtta in a darker color as an accent. To make a basic design bolder, she used the Möbelåtta doubled to get a slightly thicker yarn for the pattern color.

Using the doubled yarn also gave Angela a new design option. The main body of the scarf is a repeat of three working ends, but the center doubled yarn is split to make a unit of four ends for the lacy end panels. Pairs of opposing leno twists create an open mesh and a new color-and-weave effect of horizontal chains across the ends of the scarf.

With light behind the scarf, yet another pattern appears in both the plain-weave and lace areas. She thinks of this scarf as a tune that changes time signatures: a slow march in four-beat time, a smooth central waltz in three beats, and finally, a return to a four-beat rhythm.

STRUCTURE
Color-and-weave with leno.

EQUIPMENT
Rigid-heddle loom, 8" weaving width; 10-dent heddle; 2 shuttles; pick-up stick; 3-clip fringe twister (optional). Note: In an 8" heddle, use the outer edge of the heddle as the “slot” for one end.

YARNS
Warp: Tuna 6/2 (100% wool; 339 yd/3.5 oz; 1,538 yd/lb; Borgs; Vävstuga), #3095 Light Sea Green, 144 yd. Möbelåtta 8/2 (100% wool; 439 yd/3.5 oz; 1,984 yd/lb; Bockens; Vävstuga), #3825 Pine, 144 yd. Weft: Tuna 6/2, #3095 Light Sea Green, 114 yd; Möbelåtta 8/2, #3825 Pine, 112 yd.

WARP LENGTH
81 working ends 96" long (allows 4" for take-up, 18" for loom waste).

SETTS
Warp: 10 epi (1 per hole and slot in a 10-dent heddle with Tuna used single and Möbelåtta used doubled). Weft: 10 ppi in plain weave; about 3¼ ppi in leno areas.

DIMENSIONS
Width in the heddle: 81⁄10". Woven length: (measured under tension on the loom) 74". Finished size: (after washing) 7¼" x 68" with 5½" fringe.
