Any yarn can be used for weaving, given the right project and tools. Therein lies the challenge! This yarn, so unsuitable as warp on a floor loom, makes a lively and colorful fabric when handled carefully on a 10" rigid-heddle loom.

Recycled sari silk yarn is composed of threads recycled from weaving sari fabrics. This highly textured, heavy yarn, which sometimes has large slubs and knots, is generally considered to be everything that is “not a weaving yarn.” The soumak wrapping makes textured ridges on the surface of the woven fabric, which bloom and fuzz in the finishing process. Sometimes the weaving moves along smoothly, sometimes there are hang-ups, but a rigid-heddle loom transforms this “not for weaving” yarn into a colorful insert for a luscious leather tote.
