Skill Builders: Rediscovering Raffia

What do you think when you hear the word raffia? Perhaps it brings to mind the macramé purses from decades ago or the stringy bundles you’d get from the craft store. No matter your past experiences, the raffia yarn that exists today is far superior.

Our rediscovery of raffia began in 2019 when our editor, Susan, happened upon a fantastic raffia yarn at a tradeshow. She was immediately intrigued about using it in her weaving. Susan had always wanted to weave with raffia, and this new find started a series of experiments.
