Want to submit a project or article to Easy Weaving with Little Looms but have questions or aren’t sure where to start? Here are a few details about our process as well as some frequently asked questions.
Designs
Our magazine features a mix of functional household items (table linens, blankets, pillows, etc.) and wearables (scarves, shawls, hats, jewelry, and garments). We also often include children’s items such as stuffed animals and games, as well as purely decorative projects, such as wall hangings, although these projects are usually limited to 2 or 3 per issue.
We accept designs for rigid-heddle, pin, tapestry, and inkle looms, as well as non-inkle bandweaving including backstrap weaving. We do not accept projects woven on multi-shaft looms, even if they are “translated” for rigid-heddle looms. If you have a question about the loom you’ve used and whether it qualifies, feel free to drop us a line.
Our current call for submissions is here.
Please submit your ideas using our simple web form to make sure we have the correct contact information and details. Feel free to submit more than one idea, but please make separate entries for each proposal.
FAQs
Will I get a reply to my submission?
We respond to all submissions received through our web form, which will email you a confirmation that your submission was received. If you submitted your idea more than 30 days ago and haven’t gotten a reply, or if something changes after you submit your proposal, please drop us a line.
Can I submit a design or article that has appeared on my website/in another magazine/etc.?
We request that proposed designs have not been published previously; please tell us if a version has appeared elsewhere or is scheduled for release. If you’re uncertain about the status of a design, email us at [email protected], and we’ll be happy to talk with you about it.
I have an idea for an article—does it have to fit the theme of the issue?
Unlike projects, articles don’t always have to fit the theme of any given issue (although it helps!). We publish a variety of articles about a wide range of topics. In any given issue you might find artist profiles, articles about weaving history, step-by-step tutorials, technique or design-process articles, and much more.
I’m located outside North America. Will you consider my work?
We welcome international submissions! Any projects accepted for publication will have to be sent to the United States for tech editing and photography, so keep that in mind. When it comes to articles, we don’t require items to be sent in for photography, making things even easier.
What are your criteria for choosing designs?
In addition to the individual merits of a design, we choose projects based on the following factors:
- Mix of items: We want to make sure each issue has a good balance of project types.
- Mix of techniques: Each issue features projects for a variety of different weaving types as well as skill levels.
- Fit with brand, theme, and aesthetic of the publication
- Photographs and design information included with the proposal: The more information you can give us in your proposal the better. While seeing a photo of a completed project is best, woven samples, examples of other similar project you’ve woven, drawdowns, sketches, yarn wraps, etc., all go a long way in helping us to envision your project.
Who is responsible for tech editing?
Patterns are reviewed by a team of trusted tech editors as well as a staff project editor at our expense. For accuracy and consistency, we ask designers to create patterns following our pattern format using our project templates. If you'd like to review a project template ahead of time, let us know.
Will I get my sample back?
We return original samples after publication (unless we make other arrangements in advance).
