While looking back at some our earliest skill guides, I realized some of them were in need of an update. I first published this kumihimo skill guide two years ago, and in that time we've come out with more, even better resources to help you get started making beautiful, colorful braids—including an incredible step-by-step video. With this skill guide, you can learn this new technique in an evening and get started braiding right away!
Today’s Skill Guide will give you a solid foundation. As you read, you’ll learn about:
- The equipment needed to start braiding and step-by-step instructions on how to make a kumihimo stand out of recycled materials.
- Kumihimo patterns and how to use them to make gorgeous braids.
- Tips for successful braiding.
- How to finish your braids with whipping.
Every item we’ve selected for this guide is part of your All Access program and will help you get the most out of your subscription. Check out the Little Looms Library and our video course website for more learning opportunities.
Happy Weaving,

Make a Portable Stand for Kumihimo
Adapted from an article by Robyn Spady
I was introduced to kumihimo, an ancient Japanese braidmaking technique, 14 years ago. Within minutes, I was intrigued. My husband built me a beautiful marudai, the round stand used while making many kumihimo braids.
However, I’m frequently on the go and like to take projects along, so I made myself a small portable marudai from recycled materials. It’s easy to make your own portable marudai. It’s a fun and affordable way to introduce yourself to a new textile craft you can take with you, too!
