Fibonacci Flow Scarf

Many aspects of nature, from the proportions of spiral shells to flower petal arrangements to tree branching patterns, express ratios similar to those of Fibonacci’s numbers. These inherent patterns in nature may explain why we find these same proportions pleasing in man-made designs.

In her scarf, designer Peg MacMorris used undyed natural silks with different textures and colors and arranged the stripes according to the Fibonacci series. In the warp, honey-hued muga silk alternates with the natural creamy Jorie II bombyx spun silk in interlaced stripes. The weft stripes consist of more types of silk, including shiny reeled Glasera, textured noil silk, and more of the wild muga silk. The natural colors of the silk combine with the “naturally pleasing” Fibonacci-based pattern to create a scarf with a classic—and calming—design.

Plain weave.

Rigid-heddle loom, 10" weaving width; 10-dent heddle; 4 stick shuttles.

Warp: Carmela (100% muga silk; 725 yd/3.5 oz; 3,400 yd/lb), Natural, 278 yd. Jorie II (100% bombyx silk; 195 yd/3.5 oz; 950 yd/lb), Natural, 123 yd. Weft: Margaret (100% bombyx silk; 375 yd/3.5 oz; 2,450 yd/lb), Natural White, 209 yd. Carmela, 42 yd. Alirio Thicker (100% bombyx silk noil; 490 yd/3.5 oz; 2,250 yd/lb), Natural, 12 yd. Glasera (100% bombyx reeled silk; 358 yd/3.5 oz; 1,635 yd/lb), White, 17 yd. All yarns by Treenway Silks.

WARP LENGTH
94 ends 100" long (allows 7" for take-up, 18" for loom waste; loom waste includes fringe).

SETTS
Warp: 10 epi (1 per slot and hole in a 10-dent heddle with Carmela used doubled and Jorie II used single). Weft: about 11 ppi.

DIMENSIONS
Width in the heddle: 94⁄10". Woven length: (measured under tension on the loom) 75". Finished size: 7¾" x 63" with 5" fringe.
