For this last installment of our summer selvedge series, we’re taking a closer look at bandweaving in all its wonderful, beautiful forms. While we’ve talked previously about using bands to embellish selvedges woven on other types of looms, we’ve yet to talk about bands in general. As an enthusiastic (some might say obsessed) inkle weaver, I couldn’t end this series without talking about how to spice up your band’s selvedges.
Emebllish with Bells, Beads, and More!
One of the easiest ways to give your pieces decorative selvedges is to string small decorative items such as beads, pearls, or charms and then as you weave each pick, position one or more at the selvedge. You can use this technique to create beautiful accessories—imagine a woven bracelet with beaded selvedges! It’s also great for creating small décor items. In this video, Sara shares an example of how she used this technique to create a lovely tablet-woven Christmas ornament with jingle bell selvedges!
How to Embellish You Selvedges
What I love about this technique is that it works for all kinds of bandweaving. You can do it on an inkle loom, backstrap setup, or other bandloom of your choice. While my example photos below are on an inkle loom, the method remains the same for all other types of bandweaving.
