Back in 2016, Margaret Stump completely blew my mind and changed the way I thought about pin looms. Before that point, all the pin-loom projects I’d seen were scarves, shawls, blankets, clothing, and pillows. Then Margaret Stump came out with her book Adorable Beasts, which featured 30 pin-loom animals. It might seem silly now, but at the time I thought a pin-loom stuffed animal was revolutionary.
We were lucky enough to be able to publish one of those projects in Handwoven—a cute little zebra that we renamed A Dazzle of Zebras. It was the first pin-loom animal we ever published—at least to my knowledge—and was one of the many little sparks that eventually became the fire behind Easy Weaving with Little Looms. We learned a lot from publishing this project and used those lessons to help us to better develop our own process for presenting 3D pin-loom projects
The zebra is able to stand on its own, thanks to pipe cleaners used in the legs.
Nearly nine years and many, many stuffed-animal projects later, I still love this little zebra. Why? First of all, it’s small and very approachable. While you do have to shape the pin-loom pieces, it’s not overly complicated. Second, I love how clever it is. It’s a great use of the two-color technique and I love how Margaret uses pipe cleaners to stabilize the zebra so it can stand tall. It’s such a small, clever change that takes this zebra to the next level.
I love this project so much I’m offering it as a bonus to subscribers! (Not a subscriber yet? Check out more information about subscriptions and all their benefits here.) These little zebras make perfect presents for the little ones in your life or are just fun to make for yourself. In fact, you might have so much fun weaving one that you might just have to go and make a whole dazzle of zebras for yourself.
Happy Weaving!
