I supposes it’s because I'm a weaver that I'm interested in the different types and sizes of towels used in other countries, but who knows? Maybe its the other way around; maybe interesting towels made me become a weaver. In any case, I wove these linen spa mitts to mimic shower mitts she used as a college student while studying abroad in France.

Although the French mitts I used during my time in France were very utilitarian, made out of beige terry cloth, and had nothing pretty about them, I designed these mitts with a knotting design worked into the palm to add a little bit of scrubbiness and make them more interesting. I chose muted colors that said “spa” to me, but you could choose two colors that match your bathroom.

Susan E. Horton’s Spa Mitts lend themselves to mindful, meditative weaving.

The pattern is written to weave 4 mitts and efficiently use 4 skeins of linen in two colors. That means warping and weaving two separate warps, reversing which color is the main color and which is the accent color, to create two sets of matching mitts. Not to be wasteful, the pattern calls for using your thrums to create the braids to hang them. The mitt construction is simple; a few seams and some hemming, and you’re done. Paired with some pretty soaps, these linen spa mitts would make a great housewarming gift or a beautiful addition to your own guest bath.
